The UK claims to be part of the free West, yet we have more CCTV cameras than anywhere else in the world. Completely enamoured of surveillance, even our bloody doorbells are filming us, says Matthew Corrigan.

Comhlámh's Global Trade Justice Course

category dublin | miscellaneous | event notice author Thursday September 29, 2011 16:06author by Fleachta - Comhlámhauthor email fleachta at comhlamh dot orgauthor phone 01 4783490 Report this post to the editors

Learn more about global trade and development justice issues!

These days everybody’s talking about local and global economics. In Ireland the debate continues about how economies should be managed, and in whose interest economic and financial decisions are made.

But what about developing countries? International trade rules have a huge impact on people in the Global South. A fair trading system could lift millions of people out of poverty, and reduce many countries’ dependence on aid. Yet trade justice activists believe in many cases the rules of the global economy have been set up to serve the interests of big business, not people.

This six evening course will introduce you to, and demystify, the world of global trade. In the current global crisis we all feel the impact of international trade on our lives, but its effect on the economies of developing countries is even bigger. The course aims to get you up to speed on some of the key issues, perspectives and debate around trade and the developing world, and reassure you that you don’t need a degree in economics to have an opinion on these issues!

We will discuss and debate questions such as the following:

How does global trade work? What role do Ireland, the EU, and the WTO play? What impacts are they having? What is the difference between Free Trade and Fair Trade? What alternatives can we propose? How can we work towards global trade justice?

The course will use a range of methods, including policy inputs on key issues, and will be lively, interactive and participatory. Speakers on the course are leading activists, experts and campaigners for trade justice. The course is introductory, not academic.

How much does it cost?
€65 non-member, €45 Comhlámh member
€25 Unemployed/students: €2 Asylum Seekers

When and where?

a bit expensive eh? i wont be paying 25 euro for biscuits i can tell you right now. problem in ireland is that we dont have enough grass roots businesses, there all multi nationals, before all this servility to the EU dictatorship, and our forced vote to lisbon//we had a good economic system before this fake celtic tiger property boom,we were still part of a global trading system,we had a very strong agricultural base, and an excellent exporting record..today when i walk up the high street all i see are multi national businesses, and business owners buying warehouse stock from illegal sweatshops in the uk,not one irish owned franchise anywhere on the high street today.we need to focus on our indigenous populations, and the development of grass roots business.
