Welcome to our 4th Annual Galway African Film Festival, films showing at the Nuns Island Theatre, Galway, 20th-22nd May 2011. From a Kenyan Science Fiction short to a good old fashioned feel good movie from South Africa, the Festival showcases the wealth of talent from the Continent of Africa.

Fourth Annual Galway African Film Festival to take place in May

From the 20th to the 22nd of May the Galway African Film Festival will take place in the Nuns Island Arts Theatre. Organised by the Galway One World Centre in conjunction with the Galway Film Society and the Huston School of Film & Digital Media, this is the fourth year of the festival and is only a few days before International Africa Day on the 25th of May. Africa Day is an annual commemoration of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity.

The purpose of the festival is to highlight African perspectives on or about the continent by African directors, producers or actors. “Mainstream Hollywood films such as Tears of the Sun usually depict the continent from the perspective of the victimised or oppressed”, said Ms Heike Vornhagen, one of the directors of the festival. “The festival will give people a chance to access high quality cinema from a continent that is consistently ignored by mainstream releases.” The film festival seeks to reverse this through reflecting the wide variety of African realities instead of being judged by western cultural attitudes. Films to be shown include science-fiction, documentaries, comedy and music, full details can be accessed at http://galwayafricanfilmfestival.wordpress.com

This year’s festival is dedicated to the memory of Mohamed Bouazizi and David Kato. Vegetable seller Mohamed’s death spark the Tunisian revolt which in turn ignited uprisings in other North African States. David, a Ugandan Human Rights activist, was murdered for being gay.
