Protest against rape comments by gardai

category dublin | gender and sexuality | event notice author Wednesday April 06, 2011 16:39author by Laurence Cox - NUI Maynooth Report this post to the editors

Protect the rights of women and migrants to protest with dignity and respect

Silent protest this Friday, April 8th at 1 pm at Dail Eireann.

If like many people in Ireland you were shocked by the recordings of Gardaí in Mayo making disparaging and threatening comments about two women protesters - including the threat of rape and deportation - come join a silent protest this Friday 8 April at 1pm at Dáil Eireann. The gathering will:

- Stand in solidarity with the women concerned

- Support the right of women everywhere to protest without fear of rape or violence

- Demand an end to the trivialisation of rape

- Support the right of migrants to protest without the threat of intimidation or deportation

- Voice our solidarity with victims of sexual violence

- Call for a promptly delivered, robust and transparent enquiry into the behaviour of the Gardaí concerned

This protest is being organised by an ad hoc group of organisations and individuals concerned with justice, equality, and women's and human rights.

Sorry I read this happening at 8pm, I wont make a 1pm demo, wont be back in time.

Good luck with it.
(And I still think you should go to a Garda station!)

Hi Caroline, Union activist -

There was some discussion about where to go among the organisers and the feeling was that the Dail was more visible as the point of this protest is to make people's outrage visible (and to do it somewhere as central as possible given that it's a lunchtime demo). It all came together in a great hurry as you can imagine.

I'd say if the numbers are in it on the day it could be put to the organisers quietly (I'm just the postman on this one). Harcourt St looks more feasible in terms of distance and keeping people together. If there were good numbers it would stop traffic.

I agree with Caroline, maybe after half an hour or so, we could walk in a spirit of solidarity with the besieged and persecuted people of Rossport. to Harcourt Station and stand there in silent protest ?

Or maybe to the GSOM office who has refused to investigate sexual threats to John Monaghan's Wife, threats which were followed up by several visits to her house when she was there alone by the same man in uniform. It is documented in today's Mail. Not a paper I like but it's good on this issue.

The Dail is closed on a FRiday evening - maybe the protest should also go to Harcourt station, where a lot of political policing is controlled from? The state is guilty but so are the Gardai for all the opppression at Corrib.

Just to say that there will also be a protest outside Belmullet Garda station on Saturday at 2 pm. The threat of rape is not new in the context of the Corrib protests - a complaint was made to the Garda Ombudsman previously - but in the nature of threats it is rare to have hard evidence of how police talk (and not only among themselves).
